Important General Advice

DO NOT:

  • WEAR CONTACTS DURING YOUR TREATMENT
  • Wash the treated area UNTIL the following day.
  • Use exfoliants or any abrasive substances for 3 weeks post treatment.
  • You can restart retinoids or glycolics for 5 to 7 days post treatment.

Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol as both negatively impact on treatment efficacy and increase post treatment “down-time”.

DO:

  • Continue with the antiviral/antibiotic tablets as directed (where applicable).
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Apply only the recommended products to the skin.
  • Spray the treated area as often as needed to reduce the sensation of heat and dryness, using any thermal spring water spray.
  • From 24 hours post treatment apply a bland emollient as often as needed to reduce the sensation of dryness and tightness, (every 2 to 3 hours is recommended).
  • Avoid very hot baths or showers for 24 hours post treatment.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours post treatment.
  • Sleep slightly propped for the first 24 to 48 hours post treatment to reduce the amount of swelling.

Day 1 to 2 post treatment:

  • Continue with any prescribed medications as directed and maintain a good fluid intake.
  • Cleanse the skin gently twice daily with a simple emollient cleanser. Cetaphil is suitable as both a cleanser and an emollient.
  • After cleansing, pat skin dry, DO NOT RUB. Then apply the emollient.
  • Reapply the emollient as often as required during the day.
  • If going outdoors apply SPF50 over the emollient and wear a wide brimmed hat to shield the skin as much as possible from UV exposure.
For low intensity treatments, you can start using a gentle mineral make-up from
day 1 or 2 as advised.

Day 3 post treatment:

  • No further oral medication is necessary (unless specifically recommended).
  • Continue with the gentle cleansing morning and night followed by applying a generous amount of the emollient.
  • The maximum amount of exfoliation occurs between days 3 to 5. Vinegar water soaks (1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 1 cup of cold water) may be used to aid in the peeling process. Do not rub or pick your skin.
  • Continue with regular application of the emollient during the day. Do not allow your skin to dry out.
  • Continue to follow sun exposure precautions.

Days 4 to 7 post treatment:

  • Continue with the gentle cleaning twice daily.
  • Use the recommended treatment serum on the cleansed face/neck.
  • Always apply the SP50 sunblock before going outdoors.
  • Use the emollient as and when needed. Gentle mineral make-up may be used.
  • Your pretreatment skin regime can be resumed.
